En el año 1837 el predio que hoy ocupa el actual Palacio Estévez era propiedad de Atanasio Aguirre. En el año 1873 es comprado por el financista Francisco Estévez, quien manda construir un palacete con un mirador en la azotea, culminada la obra por el Ingeniero Eduard De Castel en el año 1874, la familia va a ocupar el segundo piso mientras que, la planta baja se destina para alquiler, en ella se encontraban el Consulado italiano así como varios comercios.
En el año 1878 Francisco Estévez da quiebra y el edificio pasa a manos del Banco de Londres y Río de la Plata que luego vende al Estado uruguayo.
"El 31 de diciembre de 1878 , D. Lorenzo Latorre y el Ministro de Gobierno José M. Montero firman la escritura de compra para el Estado por la cantidad de $ 130.000,00 oro sellado.
Entregado en definitiva el poder por Latorre a Vidal, en marzo del 80 le correspondió a este último iniciar la actividad presidencial en la residencia. La mudanza se realizó el viernes 2 de abril del 80. Y la inauguración oficial del edificio, con entrada pública ocurrió el 25 de mayo de ese año."

Dicho edificio pasó por varias refacciones las mismas fueron realizadas por el Ingeniero Alberto Capurro, y tienen que ver con retirar los miradores, mantener el pórtico de columnas y agregar un frontón triangular donde se coloca el Escudo Nacional entre otras.
Es en el año 1880 que por decreto del General Lorenzo Latorre se destruye El Fuerte lugar que hasta ese momento se encontraba el Ministerio de Hacienda, por lo que, el mismo es trasladado al Palacio Estévez o Casa de Gobierno.
"El Palacio de Gobierno se halla situado en el costado sur de la gran plaza de la Independencia, y en el tienen su asiento la Presidencia de la República, los Ministerio de la Guerra y Marina, de Gobierno o Interior, de Relaciones Exteriores y Culto, y el de Hacienda, la Tesorería de la Nación, la Contaduría General y otras dependencias ..."

"Llamaban El Fuerte, a la casa de gobierno, que ocupaba una manzana situada donde es hoy la plaza denominada de Zabala. Era un sólido edificio bajo con techo de teja, construido en cuadro. La portada, de tosca apariencia miraba al norte. Entrando, a la izquierda, se hallaba el cuerpo de guardia, siguiéndole la oficia de Tesorería llamada también "Cajas Reales", con el año de su fundación en relieve sobre granito : 1768. A la derecha, la oficina de servicios indispensables, y un lienzo de pared al principio hasta la esquina del oeste, donde años después se edificó de altos de azotea."

"El Fuerte proyectado por el Ingeniero Petrarca en el actual emplazamiento de la Plaza Zabala, fue una de las primeras construcciones militares levantadas en la península, entre 1724 - 1725, con el objetivo de defender la ciudad colonial. Esta construcción, si bien en sus orígenes fue proyectada para cumplir funciones de defensa, a finales del siglo XVIII fue absorbida por el nuevo amanzanamiento de la ciudad colonial, perdiendo así su razón militar, pasando entonces a desempeñarse como sede de los diferentes gobernadores y alojamiento de reparticiones públicas. El 5 de mayo de 1829 un incendio provocó problemas en El Fuerte pero el mismo es reparado y continuó prestando servicios hasta que posteriormente en 1880, esta casa de gobierno fue demolida por decreto de Latorre, estableciendo que dicho solar se transformara en una plaza pública."

Billete de un peso argentino, peso fuerte, Banco de la Provincia de Buenos Aires.
"Presenta en el anverso la figura del General Manuel Pinto, gobernador de Buenos Aires en 1852. También incluye las ilustraciones de un marino (extremo inferior izquierdo) y una campesina con un haz de mieses (extremo inferior derecho).
Reconocido con el símbolo $F, el peso fuerte fue una moneda convertible.
La viñeta que muestra un marinero es un tema que aparece en varios billetes de la época, como representación de la navegación y el comercio internacional.
De manera inusual, la imagen femenina aquí parece tener valor decorativo, pero las mieses incluidas la convierten en alegoría de la agricultura. Al igual que el marinero, sus rasgos y atuendo responden a un modelo característico del Romanticismo europeo y estadounidense.
Este fue una de las denominaciones libradas en pesos fuertes por el Banco de la Provincia de Buenos Aires en 1871, de acuerdo con la ley que autorizaba a las entidades financieras públicas y a varias privadas a emitir papel moneda.
Al igual que lo ocurrido con otros billetes emitidos por el estado bonaerense, su respaldo en metálico(que el texto legal indica claramente en Pesos fuertes oro) se vio cuestionado y tuvo poca aceptación en otras provincias. Pero, incluso en Buenos Aires, su real valor de compra pronto fue inferior al nominal y la conversión llegó a hacerse con quitas importantes, hasta su casi total desvalorización y uso como pesos corrientes."
